Watch out, English speaker

Spanish often uses 'se' + third-person verb to express passive or impersonal meaning, while English typically uses a passive form with 'be' or an active subject like 'people'. For example, 'Solo alrededor del 40% se recicla' means 'Only around 40% is recycled'—not 'it recycles itself.' English speakers may wrongly add a reflexive meaning or try to insert a subject like 'they,' but Spanish leaves the agent unstated. In Spanish, 'llegar a' followed by a number or percentage means 'to reach' or 'to hit' a figure, and the preposition 'a' is required before the number. English speakers often omit 'a' because English says 'reached 43%' without a preposition. So 'llegó al 43%' is correct, while 'llegó el 43%' is wrong. Remember: 'llegar a' + quantity = 'reach a quantity.'

Grammar spotlight

Passive voice: se + third-person verb

A2

Spanish often uses se + a third-person singular or plural verb to express the passive or an impersonal statement, equivalent to English 'is ...ed' or 'people ...'. For example: se recicla ('is recycled'), se recoge ('is collected').

“Solo alrededor del 40% se recicla.”— Only about 40% is recycled.

⚠️ Don't use ser + past participle to directly translate English passive sentences; in everyday speech the se passive is more common.

Verb phrase: llegar a + quantity

A2

Llegar a is followed by a number or percentage to mean 'to reach a certain amount or level'. For example: llegó al 43% means 'it reached 43%'. Note that the preposition a is required before a percentage.

“en 2023 solo se llegó al 43%.”— in 2023 it only reached 43%.

⚠️ Don't forget the preposition a: llegar al 43%, not llegar el 43%.

In Spain, trash bins come in different colors: yellow (envases, packaging), blue (papel, paper), green (vidrio, glass), brown (orgánico, organic waste), and gray (resto, other waste). Brown bins have only become common in many cities in recent years, but organic waste makes up nearly 40% of household trash.
