Watch out, English speaker

English speakers often default to the simple past for all past actions, but Spanish distinguishes between completed actions (preterite) and ongoing or background states (imperfect). In biographies, use the preterite for specific events like 'nació' or 'fundó', but switch to the imperfect for descriptions of ongoing situations, such as 'Cuando tenía 22 años'. Mixing them up can make your Spanish sound unnatural or change the meaning. When describing background or continuous past states, English often uses the simple past ('When I was 22'), but Spanish requires the imperfect ('Cuando tenía 22 años'). The imperfect is not just for 'was/were + -ing'; it also covers habitual actions, age, time, and mental or emotional states in the past. Using the preterite here would imply a completed action, which is usually incorrect. English speakers might be tempted to use the preterite for everything because English past tense is simpler, but Spanish demands a clear distinction. For example, 'tenía' (imperfect) sets the scene, while 'tuvo' (preterite) would mean 'had' as a completed event. Mastering this contrast is key to sounding fluent and accurate in Spanish narration.

Grammar spotlight

Pretérito indefinido (simple past)

A2

Used to describe completed actions in the past. It is common in biographies, as in 'nació' (was born), 'fundó' (founded), and 'escribió' (wrote).

“Steinem nació en Ohio en 1934.”— Steinem was born in Ohio in 1934.

⚠️ Do not confuse the pretérito indefinido with the present perfect; the present perfect is used for past actions connected to the present.

Pretérito imperfecto (imperfect) for background descriptions

A2

Used to describe ongoing states or background in the past, as in 'Cuando tenía 22 años' (When I was 22 years old). 'Tenía' is the imperfect form of 'tener'.

“Cuando tenía 22 años, abortó en secreto en Londres.”— When she was 22, she had a secret abortion in London.

⚠️ Note that 'cuando + imperfect' sets the background, while the main clause uses the pretérito indefinido for the event.
