Watch out, English speaker

Spanish uses 'desde hace + time period' with the present tense to say how long something has been going on: 'trabaja con Sanitas desde hace cinco años' means 'has been working with Sanitas for five years.' English speakers instinctively reach for the present perfect ('has worked') or try to translate 'for' with 'por,' but Spanish keeps the present tense and uses 'desde hace.' Don't confuse this with 'desde' + a point in time (desde 2019) or 'hace' + time meaning 'ago' (hace cinco años = five years ago). To express purpose, Spanish uses 'para + infinitive': 'hablan para renovar su acuerdo' = 'they are talking in order to renew their agreement.' English speakers often try to insert a subject or use 'for + -ing' as in English ('for renewing'), but Spanish 'para' must be followed by the bare infinitive, never a gerund. Watch out too for 'por,' which English learners overuse; 'por' usually signals cause or exchange, while 'para' signals goal or destination.

desde hace + time period

This structure means 'for (a certain amount of time)' or 'since (a certain time) ago' and is used with the present tense to emphasize that an action started in the past and continues to the present. It is essential to include 'hace' after 'desde' when using a time period.

“Este banco trabaja con Sanitas desde hace cinco años.”— This bank has been working with Sanitas for five years.

⚠️ Do not write 'desde cinco años'; you must include 'hace'.

Bank-insurance partnerships in Spain

In Spain, partnerships between banks and insurance companies are very common, known as 'bancaseguros'. Banks use their branches to sell insurance products, while insurance companies use bank channels to reach more customers. This model allows customers to conveniently purchase insurance while doing their banking.
