Watch out, English speaker

Spanish uses 'es difícil + infinitive' to say 'it is difficult to do something.' English speakers often try to insert a subject like 'it' or 'for me,' but Spanish keeps the structure impersonal and uses the infinitive directly. Remember: the adjective is always masculine singular because the subject is the action itself, not a specific person or thing. When using 'es + adjective + infinitive,' English speakers may mistakenly conjugate the verb to match a person, as in 'es difícil pido.' In Spanish, the infinitive is fixed and never conjugated in this pattern. Also, don't add 'para' before the infinitive; just use the bare infinitive after the adjective.

Grammar spotlight

es difícil + infinitive

A2

Use the structure 'es + adjective + infinitive' to express that doing something is difficult/easy/etc. The adjective stays in the masculine singular form because the subject is the infinitive action that follows.

“Ahora es difícil pedir la Seguridad Social en otro país.”— Now it is difficult to apply for Social Security in another country.

⚠️ Don't write 'es difícil de pedir'; just use the infinitive directly after the adjective.
