Watch out, English speaker

Spanish 'cuando' clauses often use the present tense to talk about general truths or future events, while English may use 'when' with the present or future. For example, 'Cuando un paciente recibe un tratamiento...' translates as 'When a patient receives treatment...'—but English speakers might mistakenly use 'will receive' for future meaning. Remember: Spanish present tense can cover both habitual and future contexts in time clauses. Spanish 'acceder a' literally means 'to access to', but English 'access' is a transitive verb that takes a direct object without a preposition. So 'acceder a estos trabajos' is 'access these jobs', not 'access to these jobs'. Also, 'acceder a' is more formal than English 'get into', so use it in professional contexts.

Grammar spotlight

Time clauses with cuando

A2

Cuando introduces a time clause meaning 'when'. The verb in the clause is in the indicative present or past, and the main clause describes the result. This structure sets the time background for the main action.

“Cuando un paciente recibe un tratamiento, detrás hay un equipo grande de profesionales.”— When a patient receives treatment, there is a large team of professionals behind it.

⚠️ Don't use cuando + subjunctive for habitual actions unless the main clause is in the future.

Verb phrase 'acceder a'

B1

Acceder a means 'to enter, to gain access to' and is followed by a noun or an infinitive. It is common in formal contexts, such as entering the workforce or gaining opportunities.

“La Formación Profesional es una buena vía para acceder a estos trabajos.”— Vocational training is a good path to access these jobs.

⚠️ Don't forget the preposition a; using acceder directly with an object is incorrect.

In recent years, FP has become increasingly popular due to its practical focus and high employment rate, especially in the healthcare field. Many FP centers collaborate with hospitals to offer internships.
