Watch out, English speaker

English speakers often use the simple past ("I saw") where Spanish requires the present perfect (he visto) for recent events or ones connected to now. Spanish uses the present perfect with time markers like ya or este domingo, while English may use the simple past. Remember: Spanish present perfect = haber + past participle, not just a past tense. English uses the gerund (-ing) mainly for progressive tenses ("is running") or as a noun. Spanish gerundio (-ando/-iendo) often expresses manner or result ("by doing" or "thus doing"), not ongoing action. Don't translate "evitando" as "avoiding" in a progressive sense; it means "thereby avoiding" or "thus preventing."

Grammar spotlight

Present perfect (Pretérito perfecto): haber + past participle

A2

Formed with the present tense of haber (he, has, ha, hemos, habéis, han) + past participle. It expresses a past action connected to the present. Often used with time expressions like ya (already) or este domingo (this Sunday).

“Los forenses ya han identificado a 56 personas.”— The forensic experts have already identified 56 people.

⚠️ Don't confuse it with the simple past: use the simple past for completed actions with no connection to the present.

Gerund (Gerundio) expressing manner or result

B1

The gerund (-ando/-iendo) can express how an action is done or its result, equivalent to 'by doing...' or 'thus...'. In this lesson, evitando expresses result.

“Logró activar el freno al darse cuenta del error, evitando una colisión mayor.”— He managed to activate the brake upon realizing the error, avoiding a major collision.

⚠️ The gerund cannot function as the main verb; it must depend on the main clause verb.
