Watch out, English speaker
Spanish often uses 'se + third-person verb' for impersonal or passive meaning, as in 'se llama' (it is called). English speakers may try to translate literally as 'it calls itself' or use a personal subject like 'they call it', but Spanish avoids specifying the agent. Remember that this structure is common in news to report facts objectively, so don't add an unnecessary subject.
In Spanish, relative clauses with an indefinite or nonexistent antecedent require the subjunctive, e.g., 'cualquier sistema que use su software' (any system that uses its software). English uses the indicative 'uses' because the system is hypothetical but grammatically treated as real. English speakers often mistakenly use the indicative 'usa' in Spanish, but the subjunctive 'use' is mandatory when the antecedent is uncertain, such as with 'cualquier' or 'un' in searches.

Grammar spotlight
Passive voice and impersonal sentences: se + third-person verb
B1
Spanish often uses 'se + third-person verb' to form impersonal or passive sentences, meaning 'one...' or 'is...'. For example, 'se llama' means 'is called'. This structure is common in technical news to state facts objectively.
“El problema se llama PHPShell.”— The problem is called PHPShell.
⚠️ Don't write 'El problema llama PHPShell'; omitting 'se' creates an incorrect active sentence meaning 'the problem calls PHPShell'.
Subjunctive in relative clauses
B1
When the antecedent of a relative clause is uncertain or nonexistent, the verb in the clause takes the subjunctive. For example, in 'cualquier sistema que use su software', 'sistema' is uncertain, so 'use' (subjunctive) is used.
“Cualquier sistema que use su software.”— Any system that uses its software.
⚠️ Don't write 'que usa' because the antecedent is uncertain; the subjunctive 'use' is required.

PHP and the Global Web
PHP is an open-source server-side scripting language created by Rasmus Lerdorf in 1994. It is widely used to build dynamic websites, such as content management systems like WordPress. About 70% of websites worldwide use PHP, including early versions of Facebook. This vulnerability reminds us that the security of open-source technology requires global collaboration to maintain.
