Watch out, English speaker

Spanish often uses 'se' + third-person verb to express passive or impersonal meaning, while English typically relies on a true passive or generic 'you/they.' For example, 'El puerto se llena de gente' literally looks like 'the port fills itself with people,' but it means 'The port gets filled with people' or 'People fill the port.' English speakers may wrongly add a reflexive meaning or try to translate 'se' as 'itself.' 'Deber' usually means 'must' or 'to owe,' so 'deberse a' can look like 'to must itself to' or 'to owe itself to.' In fact, 'deberse a' is a fixed phrase meaning 'to be due to' or 'to be caused by.' English speakers may confuse it with obligation ('debo estudiar') and miss the causal meaning in sentences like 'Su sabor dulce se debe a su origen único.'

Grammar spotlight

Pronominal verbs: se + verb conjugation for passive or impersonal meaning

A2

When the doer of the action is not emphasized, you can use se + a third-person singular or plural verb to express passive or impersonal meaning. For example, 'se llena' means 'is filled' or 'people fill'. The verb must agree in number with the subject.

“El puerto se llena de gente.”— The port fills with people.

⚠️ Don't forget to make the verb agree in number with the subject, e.g., 'se llenan las calles' uses a plural verb.

deberse a meaning 'to be due to'

B1

deberse a is a fixed expression meaning 'due to' or 'attributable to'. It is typically used to explain a cause and is followed by a noun or noun phrase.

“Su sabor dulce se debe a su origen único.”— Its sweet flavor is due to its unique origin.

⚠️ Don't confuse it with deber + infinitive (must do something).
