Watch out, English speaker

English speakers often use the simple past ("they signed") where Spanish requires the present perfect (han firmado) because the action still feels connected to the present. In Spanish, the present perfect is much more common in news and recent events, so using the preterite (firmaron) can sound oddly distant or final. After time conjunctions like después de que, English uses the plain past ("after he criticized"), but Spanish switches to the imperfect subjunctive (criticara) when the main clause is past. English speakers tend to copy the indicative, producing *después de que criticó, which is a classic grammar slip. The verb acusar de mirrors English "accuse of," but Spanish uses de, not por. Also, cuestionar and silenciar look like "question" and "silence," yet they often mean "to challenge/call into question" and "to shut down/suppress" in debates, so literal translations can miss the nuance.
