Watch out, English speaker

Spanish impersonal and passive 'se' (se han hecho controles, se podría haber arreglado) has no neat English equivalent. English speakers instinctively render it with a passive ('checks were done') or a generic 'they,' but Spanish prefers 'se' + third person and often keeps the agent out entirely. Watch out for agreement: with 'se' the verb agrees with the thing, not with an implied 'people.' English uses the infinitive or 'that' + indicative after verbs of preventing, demanding, or possibility, so learners default to indicative in Spanish. But verbs like 'impedir que,' 'reclamar que,' and expressions of possibility trigger the subjunctive (no han impedido que se vuelva, reclaman que se compruebe). Don't copy the English pattern—if the main clause expresses influence, emotion, or doubt, switch to subjunctive. A subtler trap: English 'prevent that it happens' vs Spanish 'impedir que + subjunctive' can tempt learners to use 'que' + indicative because the English feels factual. Remember the subjunctive signals the unrealized or desired outcome, not a reported fact.

Grammar spotlight

Passive voice and impersonal sentences: se + third-person verb

B1

Spanish often uses se + a third-person verb to form impersonal or passive sentences, meaning 'people...' or 'is/are...'. For example: se han hecho controles ('checks have been carried out'), se podría haber arreglado ('it could have been fixed').

“La Policía Municipal explica que sí se han hecho controles de documentación.”— The Municipal Police explain that document checks have indeed been carried out.

⚠️ Make sure the verb after se agrees with the subject, e.g. se han hecho (plural).

Subjunctive in negative commands and evaluative clauses

B1

When the main clause expresses prevention, request, possibility, etc., the subordinate clause often uses the subjunctive. For example: no han impedido que se vuelva ('they haven't prevented it from being offered again'), reclaman que se compruebe ('they demand that it be checked').

“Las retiradas no han impedido que se vuelva a ofrecer el servicio.”— The vehicle seizures have not prevented the service from being offered again.

⚠️ After impedir que, you must use the subjunctive, not the indicative.

Traffic rules in El Retiro Park

El Retiro is one of Madrid's most famous parks and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to municipal regulations, only transport and assembly vehicles are allowed inside the park under strict restrictions; ordinary bicycles and tourist tricycles may not enter freely or park on the sidewalks. This rule aims to protect the park's environment and pedestrian safety.
