Watch out, English speaker

Spanish often uses the passive se (se vendieron) where English prefers an active subject or a passive with 'by'. English speakers may try to insert an agent with 'por' or use 'fueron vendidos', but the se-passive focuses on the action itself and is more natural in Spanish. Remember the verb agrees with the thing sold, not with an implied agent. When describing changes, Spanish uses verbs like aumentar, crecer, or caer followed by 'un + percentage' or 'hasta + number'. English speakers might directly translate 'increased by 5%' as 'aumentó por 5%' or 'creció a 8 million' as 'creció a 8 millones', but Spanish requires 'en' for the amount of increase and 'hasta' for the resulting level. Also note that percentages take 'un' (un 5%), not just the number. Spanish present participles (-ando/-endo) often express result or manner, as in 'alcanzando una cuota'. English speakers might use a full clause with 'and' or 'which', but the participle is more concise. Past participles (-ado/-ido) can act as adjectives, as in 'incentivada por', which English might render with a relative clause. Avoid overusing 'by' for the agent; 'por' is correct here, but the participle agreement with the noun is crucial.

Grammar spotlight

Passive voice and passive reflexive (se vendieron / se comercializaron)

B1

Spanish often uses the passive reflexive (se + third-person verb) to express 'is/are done', emphasizing the action rather than the agent. For example, 'se vendieron 290.117 coches' means '290,117 cars were sold'. Note that the verb must agree in number with the subject.

“En septiembre se vendieron 290.117 coches eléctricos en la Unión Europea.”— In September, 290,117 electric cars were sold in the European Union.

⚠️ Do not mistake se for a reflexive pronoun and confuse the subject; remember the subject is coches, so the verb must be plural.

Verbs of increase/decrease with en/un % (aumentar/disminuir/crecer + en/un %)

B1

When describing changes in data, verbs like aumentar, disminuir, crecer, and caer are commonly followed by 'un + percentage' to indicate the extent of change, or by 'hasta + number' to indicate the level reached. For example, 'creció un 5,7% hasta 8,52 millones'.

“Las ventas totales aumentaron un 9,3% hasta las 971.048 unidades.”— Total sales increased by 9.3% to 971,048 units.

⚠️ Do not omit the article un; for example, 'aumentó 9%' is not idiomatic; say 'aumentó un 9%'.

Present participle indicating result or manner (alcanzando / incentivada)

B1

The present participle (-ando/-endo) can express a simultaneous action or result, as in 'alcanzando una cuota' meaning 'thus reaching a share'. The past participle (-ado/-ido) can function as an adjective, as in 'incentivada por' meaning 'driven by'.

“Los híbridos enchufables crecieron un 18,6% hasta 860.257 unidades, alcanzando una cuota del 10,1%.”— Plug-in hybrids grew by 18.6% to 860,257 units, thus reaching a 10.1% share.

⚠️ Do not confuse the present participle with a conjugated verb; for example, 'alcanzando' cannot stand alone as the main verb.
