Watch out, English speaker

Spanish uses ir + a + infinitive for near-future plans, while English often uses 'going to' or the present progressive. English speakers may wrongly reach for the Spanish simple future (invertirá) in casual speech, but ir a + infinitive is the natural everyday choice. Example: Va a invertir means 'It is going to invest,' not 'It will invest' in tone. Spanish verbs like fabricar, invertir, and generar are used with the same subject as English, but learners often forget that fabricar is a regular -ar verb while invertir is stem-changing (e > ie). English has no stem changes, so speakers may say invirte instead of invierte. Watch the third-person forms: invierte, invierten. Spanish nouns carry gender, and car vocabulary is no exception: la marca, la planta, la generación, el modelo. English speakers often drop the article or use the wrong one, saying 'marca es' instead of 'la marca es.' Also, planta means 'plant/factory' here, not 'plant' as in a vegetable, which can cause confusion. Spanish adjectives agree in gender and number with the noun, unlike English. Contento becomes contenta, contentos, contentas depending on who is happy. English speakers may leave it invariable, saying 'ella está contento' instead of 'contenta.' The same applies to eléctrico: coches eléctricos, but una parte eléctrica.

Grammar spotlight

ir a + infinitive (near future)

A1

This structure means 'going to do something' and is formed with the conjugated form of ir + a + infinitive. It is more common than the future tense, especially in everyday spoken Spanish.

“Va a invertir más de 5.000 millones de euros.”— It will invest more than 5 billion euros.

⚠️ Don't forget the 'a' in the middle. You can't say 'va invertir'; you must say 'va a invertir'.
