Watch out, English speaker

English speakers often use the indicative after 'pedir' because English says 'ask that someone does something' with a plain verb. In Spanish, 'pedir' (like 'request') triggers the subjunctive: 'pide que se condene', not 'pide que se condena'. Think of it as expressing a wish, not a fact. English avoids the impersonal 'se' by using 'they' or 'people' (e.g., 'they condemn'). Spanish uses 'se + third-person verb' for unknown or generic agents: 'se condenen los actos'. Don't translate 'se' as 'itself' or 'themselves' here; it's not reflexive. English adjectives like 'xenophobic' are the same in form, but Spanish 'xenófobo' changes with gender: 'xenófobo/xenófoba'. Also, 'acoso' means 'harassment', not 'acos' (which isn't a word). Watch out for false friends: 'informar' means 'to report' or 'to inform', not 'to inform' only.

Grammar spotlight

Verb pedir + subjunctive

B1

When the main verb is pedir (to request, to ask for), the verb in the subordinate clause must be in the subjunctive (subjuntivo). This expresses a wish or request, not a statement of fact.

“Amnistía Internacional pide que se condene la violencia.”— Amnesty International asks that the violence be condemned.

⚠️ Don't use the indicative, e.g., 'pide que condena'—this is incorrect.

Impersonal se + third person

A2

When the agent of the action is not needed or not emphasized, use 'se + verb in third person singular/plural' to form an impersonal sentence. It is often translated as 'people...' or with a passive construction.

“...pide que se condenen los actos racistas.”— ...asks that racist acts be condemned.

⚠️ Make sure the verb agrees in number with the following noun, e.g., 'se condenen los actos' uses the plural.

Ceuta: A European Enclave in Africa

Ceuta is a Spanish autonomous city on the North African coast, bordering Morocco. It is the only part of the European Union that shares a land border with Africa. It often serves as an entry point for migrants into Europe, so related news attracts much attention and makes it a focus of political and media debate.
