Watch out, English speaker

English speakers often want to use 'is linked with' or 'is connected to' and may forget the preposition 'a' because English uses 'to' or 'with.' In Spanish, the structure is fixed: estar + ligado + a. Also, ligado must agree in gender and number with the subject, so you say está ligada if the subject is feminine, not está ligado. English uses passive voice with 'be + past participle' or the impersonal 'one' or 'they.' Spanish often avoids this with se + third-person verb. A common mistake is to add a personal subject like 'it' or 'they' before se, but se already carries that impersonal meaning. Also, the verb agrees with the thing, not with an agent: se calcula, not se calculan unless the thing is plural. Another trap is word order and reflexive confusion. English speakers may see 'se sustituye' and think it means 'it substitutes itself,' but here se is passive or impersonal, meaning 'is replaced.' Remember that se + verb can often be translated as English passive without 'by' phrase. Context tells you whether it is passive or impersonal.
