Watch out, English speaker

Spanish uses the present progressive (estar + gerundio) to describe ongoing actions or current trends, similar to English 'is growing.' However, English often prefers the simple present for general statements, so 'El mercado está creciendo' might be translated as 'The market is growing' or 'The market grows' depending on context. Be careful not to overuse the progressive in English where a simple present would sound more natural. Spanish 'mientras que' directly contrasts two facts, equivalent to English 'while' or 'whereas.' English speakers might mistakenly use 'meanwhile' or 'while' in a temporal sense, but 'mientras que' always implies contrast. For example, 'Las ventas de eléctricos aumentaron, mientras que los híbridos crecieron' means 'Electric car sales increased, whereas hybrids grew,' not 'while hybrids grew' in a temporal sense. Spanish 'mientras que' is a fixed phrase and cannot be separated. English 'while' can sometimes be omitted or replaced by 'but' or 'and,' but in Spanish, 'mientras que' is required for clear contrast. Also, note that 'mientras' without 'que' means 'while' temporally, so omitting 'que' changes the meaning.

Characteristics of the Spanish Second-Hand Car Market

In the Spanish second-hand car market, cars over 15 years old make up a very high proportion, pushing the average vehicle age to 11 years, which is above the European average. This reflects the aging of Spain's car fleet and has prompted the government to introduce incentive programs to encourage renewal.
