Watch out, English speaker

English speakers often translate 'uno de los monumentos más espectaculares' as 'one of the most spectacular monuments,' which is correct, but they may forget that the noun must be plural and the adjective must agree in gender and number. In English, 'one of the most spectacular monument' is wrong, but in Spanish, using a singular noun after 'uno de los' is a common mistake. Always use a plural noun: 'uno de los monumentos más espectaculares.' Spanish uses 'se + third-person verb' for passive constructions, as in 'se descubrieron pinturas.' English speakers might try to use 'ser + past participle' (e.g., 'fueron descubiertas'), which is also possible but less common in everyday Spanish. The 'se' passive emphasizes the action, not the agent, and is very frequent in news and descriptions. Remember that the verb agrees with the subject: 'se descubrieron pinturas' (plural), 'se descubrió una pintura' (singular).

Grammar spotlight

Superlative expression: uno de los + plural noun + más + adjective

A2

To say 'one of the most...' in Spanish, use the structure 'uno de los/las + plural noun + más + adjective'. The noun must be plural, and the adjective must agree in gender and number with the noun.

“Es uno de los monumentos naturales más espectaculares de Andalucía.”— It is one of the most spectacular natural monuments in Andalusia.

⚠️ Learners often forget to make the noun plural or fail to change the adjective to match.

Passive voice: 'se + third-person verb'

B1

Spanish often uses 'se + third-person singular/plural verb' to form passive sentences, emphasizing the action rather than the agent. For example, 'se descubrieron pinturas' means 'paintings were discovered'.

“En 2004 se descubrieron pinturas rupestres.”— In 2004, cave paintings were discovered.

⚠️ The verb must agree in number with the subject. Since 'pinturas' is plural, use 'descubrieron'.
