Ahora, 75 años después, vuelve a llamarse Canal 7.

Watch out, English speaker

Spanish loves the passive 'se': 'se reveló el logo' literally reads like 'the logo revealed itself,' but English needs a true passive, 'the logo was unveiled.' English speakers often try 'fue revelado,' which is grammatical but sounds stilted here; the impersonal 'se' is the natural choice when the doer is vague or unimportant. Spanish gerunds (-ando/-iendo) often express manner or accompanying action, as in 'abrieron la emisión recordando que...' ('they opened the broadcast by recalling that...'). English speakers may reach for 'while remembering' or a full clause, but the tight gerund phrase is idiomatic; just don't confuse it with English's progressive '-ing,' which Spanish forms with 'estar + gerundio.' Relative clauses with a prepositional antecedent use 'el/la que' after the preposition: 'el acto en el que habló Eva Perón.' English can drop or shift the preposition ('the event Eva Perón spoke at'), but Spanish must keep 'en el que' and match gender/number to the antecedent. Forgetting the article ('en que') or mismatching gender is a common slip.

Grammar spotlight

Passive se: se + third-person verb

B1

In Spanish, the passive is often formed with se plus a third-person verb. This construction emphasizes the action itself rather than the agent. For example: se reveló el logo (the logo was unveiled), se anunció el regreso (the return was announced).

“Durante la gala se reveló el nuevo logotipo de la señal y se anunció el regreso al nombre histórico.”— During the gala, the channel's new logo was unveiled and the return to the historic name was announced.

⚠️ Make sure the verb after se agrees in number with the subject (el logotipo, el regreso). Do not mistakenly use the plural.

Gerund expressing manner or accompanying action

B1

The gerund (-ando/-iendo) can express how an action is performed or what accompanies it. For example: abrieron la emisión recordando que... (they opened the broadcast by recalling that...), where recordando indicates what they were doing at the same time.

“Seis conductores conocidos abrieron la emisión recordando que ese mismo día nació Canal 7.”— Six well-known hosts opened the broadcast by recalling that Canal 7 was born on that very day.

⚠️ The subject of the gerund must be the same as the subject of the main clause. Avoid dangling modifiers.

B1

When the antecedent functions as the object of a preposition in the relative clause, use 'preposition + el/la que' to introduce the clause. For example: el acto en el que habló Eva Perón (the event at which Eva Perón spoke); la experiencia para la que se importaron equipos (the endeavor for which equipment was imported).

“El acto por el Día de la Lealtad en Plaza de Mayo, en el que habló Eva Perón.”— The event for Loyalty Day in Plaza de Mayo, at which Eva Perón spoke.

⚠️ The preposition cannot be omitted, and the relative pronoun must agree in gender and number with the antecedent (el acto → en el que).

The Birth of Argentine Television

On October 17, 1951, Argentina's first television station, LR3 Radio Belgrano Televisión (later known as Canal 7), made its first official broadcast. It aired the Loyalty Day commemoration in Plaza de Mayo, where Eva Perón gave a speech. The driving force behind it, Jaime Yankelevich, imported equipment and installed an antenna. The channel later changed its name several times, and in 2026 it restored the name Canal 7.
