Watch out, English speaker

Spanish 'hay que + infinitive' expresses general necessity, like English 'one must' or 'you have to' in an impersonal sense. English speakers often mistakenly use 'tener que' when they mean an objective need, but 'tener que' implies a specific person's obligation. Remember: 'hay que' has no subject, while 'tener que' always does. Spanish 'no... sino...' means 'not... but rather...' and corrects a previous statement. English speakers might confuse 'sino' with 'si no' (if not), but 'sino' is a single word contrasting two elements. Also, unlike English 'but', 'sino' can only be used after a negative clause. Spanish 'lo que' introduces a noun clause meaning 'what' or 'the thing that', referring to an entire idea. English speakers often try to translate it literally as 'that which' or 'what that', but in Spanish it's a fixed relative pronoun. It can be the subject or object of a sentence, and English often uses 'which' or 'what' instead.

Grammar spotlight

hay que + infinitive (expressing necessity)

A2

hay que followed by an infinitive means 'one must' or 'it is necessary to do something.' It is an impersonal expression that does not refer to any specific person. Unlike tener que (which expresses a personal obligation), hay que emphasizes an objective need.

“También hay que contemplar el flete marítimo, los impuestos, los gastos aduaneros y el montaje.”— You also need to consider ocean freight, taxes, customs duties, and assembly.

⚠️ Do not write 'hay que contemplamos'; hay que is always followed by an infinitive and never changes with the subject.

no... sino... (not... but rather...)

B1

The no A sino B structure means 'not A but B' and is used to correct or contrast. What follows sino is the correct or emphasized information. Note the difference between sino (one word) and si no (two words, meaning 'if not').

“La casa no llega montada, sino en piezas listas para ensamblar.”— The house does not arrive assembled, but rather in pieces ready to be put together.

⚠️ sino is one word ('but rather'), while si no is two words ('if not'). Do not confuse them.

lo que introducing a noun clause ('the thing/point that')

B1

lo que is equivalent to English 'what' or 'which' and refers to an entire concept or situation mentioned earlier. It can function as the subject or object of a sentence. It is formed by the neuter article lo + the relative pronoun que.

“La carga impositiva total puede ubicarse entre el 30% y el 50% del valor CIF, lo que implica un incremento significativo sobre el costo final.”— The total tax burden can range between 30% and 50% of the CIF value, which means a significant increase in the final cost.

⚠️ Do not write 'lo cual' when introducing a non-defining clause; pay attention to whether the antecedent is clear. Here lo que refers to the entire preceding sentence.

Argentina's Housing Crisis and the Rise of Prefabricated Homes

Argentina has long faced inflation and high housing costs. Traditional construction costs about $1,400 per square meter, while the final cost of an imported prefabricated home can be as low as $450–$800 per square meter. The case of a family in Santa Fe who imported a Chinese modular home that unfolded in just one hour reflects Argentinians' urgent need for flexible, affordable housing solutions.
