Watch out, English speaker
Spanish uses the present perfect (han obtenido) for recent past events with present relevance, especially with time markers like este año or ya. English speakers often reach for the simple past ("they obtained") because English allows it freely here—but in Spanish, the simple past would sound oddly detached from the current situation. Stick with haber + past participle when the result still matters now.
After triggers like no significa que, es sorprendente que, or puede resultar sorprendente para quien, Spanish demands the subjunctive (vaya, sean), even when English uses a plain indicative ("it doesn't mean the business is going badly"). English speakers frequently default to the indicative because English has no such switch. Memorize the trigger phrases and always follow them with the subjunctive.
The Spanish structure no solo... sino también maps neatly onto English "not only... but also," but word order trips learners up. In Spanish, sino también must directly precede the emphasized element, and sino (not pero) is required after a negative first clause. Translating literally as "but also" with pero sounds wrong to native ears.

Grammar spotlight
Present perfect (Pretérito perfecto compuesto): haber + past participle
B1
Formed with the present tense of haber plus a past participle, it expresses a past action that still affects the present or an action completed within a time frame that includes now. It is often used with time expressions such as ya, todavía, and este año.
“Las seis mayores aseguradoras extranjeras han obtenido unos beneficios notables.”— The six largest foreign insurance companies have obtained notable profits.
⚠️ Do not confuse it with the simple past: the present perfect emphasizes a connection to the present, while the simple past emphasizes that the action is over.
Subjunctive in noun clauses (Subjuntivo en oraciones sustantivas)
B1
When the main clause expresses emotion, doubt, negation, or uncertainty, the verb in the subordinate clause must be in the subjunctive. Common triggers include no significa que, es sorprendente que, and puede resultar sorprendente para quien.
“Esto no significa que el negocio español vaya mal.”— This does not mean that the Spanish business is doing badly.
⚠️ After no significa que, the subjunctive is required; the indicative cannot be used.
no solo... sino también (not only... but also) structure
B1
This structure means 'not only... but also' and connects two parallel elements, emphasizing the second one. What follows sino también is usually the new, emphasized information.
“Los dividendos pueden provenir no solo de las ganancias del año en curso, sino también de reservas acumuladas.”— Dividends can come not only from the current year's profits but also from accumulated reserves.
⚠️ Sino también cannot be replaced by pero también; sino is used for contrast after a negative.

The Spanish Insurance Market and Foreign Giants
The Spanish insurance market is one of the most important in Europe and attracts many international insurance groups. Multinationals such as Generali (Italy), Allianz (Germany), AXA (France), and Zurich (Switzerland) have subsidiaries in Spain and earn profits through local operations. These foreign insurers hold more than a third of the market share in Spain and are a key part of the local financial system.
