Watch out, English speaker

Spanish often uses the subjunctive after 'después de que' even for past events, especially in formal writing, while English simply uses the past tense: 'after the FT reported.' English speakers instinctively reach for the indicative because the event is factual, but formal Spanish frequently prefers 'publicara' over 'publicó' here. Don't assume the subjunctive signals uncertainty—it can be a matter of register. 'Lejos de + infinitive' means 'far from doing X' and sets up a contrast with what actually happened, much like English 'far from reinforcing confidence, it is intensifying doubts.' The trap is translating 'lejos de' literally as 'far from' in a physical sense, or expecting a noun rather than an infinitive. Remember it always takes an infinitive and usually pairs with a clause showing the opposite result. 'Lo que' as a non-restrictive relative pronoun refers back to an entire preceding idea, equivalent to 'which' in English: '..., which has pushed the Philadelphia index down 7.20%.' English speakers may try to use 'que' alone or 'lo cual' incorrectly, or forget the comma. Note that English 'which' can refer to a whole clause, and 'lo que' is Spanish's dedicated tool for exactly that.

Grammar spotlight

después de que + subjunctive

B1

When después de que (after) introduces a time clause, the subjunctive is typically used if the action in the subordinate clause is future or unfinished relative to the main clause. If it refers to a past fact that has already occurred, the indicative can be used. In this lesson's example, which refers to a past event, the subjunctive is a common usage in formal written Spanish.

“Las caídas llegaron a ser cercanas al 4% después de que Financial Times publicara que Anthropic podría no obtener el grado de inversión.”— Losses came to be close to 4% after the Financial Times reported that Anthropic might not obtain an investment-grade rating.

⚠️ Don't automatically use the indicative just because it refers to the past; in formal written Spanish, the subjunctive is often used after después de que.

lejos de + infinitive

B1

Lejos de + infinitive means 'far from...' or 'instead of...', used to negate the first item and emphasize the second, often paired with a clause expressing a contrary result.

“Lejos de reforzar la confianza en el rally impulsado por la IA, la actual temporada de resultados está intensificando las dudas.”— Far from reinforcing confidence in the AI-driven rally, the current earnings season is intensifying doubts.

⚠️ After lejos de, use the bare infinitive directly; do not add que or a conjugated verb.

lo que introducing a non-restrictive relative clause

B1

Lo que refers to the entire preceding sentence or situation and introduces a non-restrictive relative clause, equivalent to 'which' or 'this', functioning as subject or object in the sentence.

“AMD y Marvell se han dejado un 10,88% y un 10,05%, respectivamente, lo que ha llevado al índice sectorial de Filadelfia a retroceder un 7,20%.”— AMD and Marvell have fallen 10.88% and 10.05% respectively, which has led the Philadelphia semiconductor sector index to retreat 7.20%.

⚠️ Do not replace lo que with el que, because it refers to the whole situation, not a specific noun.

The 'Magnificent Seven' and the Nasdaq

The 'Magnificent Seven' (siete magníficos) refers to seven tech giants: Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Nvidia, Meta, and Tesla. They carry great weight in the Nasdaq, and their rises and falls often determine the index's direction. The Nasdaq is dominated by tech stocks and is more volatile than the Dow Jones and the S&P 500, so when the tech sector rotates, the Nasdaq reacts most sharply.
