Watch out, English speaker
English speakers often use 'not only... but also' with parallel structures, but in Spanish 'no solo... sino también' requires that the element after 'sino también' matches the grammatical category of the element after 'no solo'. Also, unlike English 'but also', Spanish 'sino también' cannot be separated by a comma when the two parts are closely linked. A common mistake is to use 'pero también' instead of 'sino también', which changes the meaning to a simple contrast rather than an additive one.
In English, purpose clauses often use 'so that' with a modal verb (e.g., 'so that they can develop'), but Spanish 'para que' always triggers the subjunctive mood, not the indicative. English speakers may incorrectly use the indicative (e.g., 'para que desarrollan') because English does not have a distinct subjunctive form in such contexts. Remember that 'para que' is used when the subject of the main clause and the purpose clause are different; if they are the same, use 'para + infinitive'.
English 'what' in nominal clauses can often be translated as 'lo que' in Spanish, but learners sometimes use 'qué' instead, which is incorrect in this structure. 'Lo que' is a neuter relative pronoun that refers to an entire idea or situation, not a specific noun. Unlike English 'what', 'lo que' cannot be used as an interrogative in indirect questions; for those, Spanish uses 'qué'.

Grammar spotlight
no solo... sino también... (additive structure)
B1
Used to express 'not only... but also...', connecting two parallel elements. The phrase 'sino también' is followed by a word or phrase of the same type as the first element.
“Este enfrentamiento no solo define el futuro de la tecnología, sino también el equilibrio de poder mundial.”— This confrontation not only defines the future of technology, but also the global balance of power.
⚠️ Do not write 'sino que también' followed by a noun; 'sino que' should be followed by a clause.
para que + subjunctive (purpose clause)
B1
Means 'so that' or 'in order that'. When the subject of the main clause and the subordinate clause are different, use 'para que' followed by the subjunctive.
“Al mismo tiempo, el gobierno chino reforzó su apoyo a las empresas nacionales para que desarrollen alternativas propias y reduzcan su dependencia de la tecnología occidental.”— At the same time, the Chinese government strengthened its support for domestic companies so that they could develop their own alternatives and reduce their dependence on Western technology.
⚠️ After 'para que', the subjunctive must be used, not the indicative.
lo que (nominal clause)
B1
'Lo que' means 'what' or 'the thing that' and functions as a subject or object in the sentence, referring to the entire concept mentioned earlier.
“Lo que está en juego no es solo quién tiene la mejor tecnología, sino qué modelo de sociedad queremos construir con ella.”— What is at stake is not only who has the best technology, but what model of society we want to build with it.
⚠️ Do not omit 'lo'; otherwise, it becomes the relative pronoun 'que' introducing an adjectival clause.

DeepSeek and the Battle over Open-Source AI
DeepSeek is a Chinese artificial intelligence company that drew global attention in early 2025 when its open-source models performed nearly as well as top American closed-source models. Its low-cost training method challenged the industry consensus that only massive investment can produce good AI, and it also highlighted the divergence in technological approaches between China and the United States: open sharing vs. closed monopoly.
