Watch out, English speaker
Spanish uses the imperfect subjunctive in hypothetical 'si' clauses that are contrary to present or future fact, with the conditional in the main clause: 'Si esta parte decaía, siempre se podría tramitar...' English speakers often default to the simple past or 'would' in both clauses, producing 'If this part failed, it would always be possible...' which sounds acceptable but misses the grammatical mood distinction. Note that in journalistic style the imperfect indicative sometimes replaces the imperfect subjunctive, but standard grammar requires the subjunctive.
Spanish double negation with 'no... más que' or 'no... otra... que' means 'nothing other than' or 'no other... than,' and the subordinate clause also takes a negative: 'No puede haber otra respuesta que no consista en...' English speakers often translate this literally as 'There can't be another answer that doesn't consist of...' which sounds awkward and loses the emphatic force. The natural English equivalent is 'There can be no other answer than...' with a positive subordinate clause.
In the structure 'lo que + ser + adjective + es que,' Spanish uses 'lo que' as a subject clause meaning 'what is...' and 'es que' introduces a complement clause: 'Lo que es inaceptable es que... se vuelva a las divisiones.' English speakers may render this as 'What is unacceptable is that...' which is close, but they often forget that the verb after 'es que' may need the subjunctive in Spanish depending on context. Also, English tends to prefer 'The unacceptable thing is that...' or simply 'It is unacceptable that...' rather than the 'lo que' construction.

Grammar spotlight
Imperfecto de subjuntivo in hypothetical sentences
B1
When a hypothetical conditional sentence expresses a situation contrary to present or future fact, the conditional clause uses the imperfecto de subjuntivo and the main clause uses the conditional (simple conditional). For example: Si esta parte decaía, siempre se podría tramitar... (If this part failed, it could still be processed...). Note: In journalistic style, the imperfecto de indicativo is sometimes used instead of the imperfecto de subjuntivo, but standard grammar requires the subjunctive.
“Si esta parte decaía, siempre se podría tramitar como proyecto de ley.”— If this part failed, it could still be processed as a bill.
⚠️ Do not confuse the imperfecto de subjuntivo in conditional clauses with the imperfecto de indicativo; the standard usage is si + imperfecto de subjuntivo.
Double negation: no... más que / no... otra... que
B1
In Spanish, double negation is often used for emphasis, meaning 'there is no other... than'. The structure is: no + verb + other + que + clause/noun. For example: no puede haber otra respuesta que no consista en... (there can be no other answer than one that does not consist of...). Note that the subordinate clause also requires a negative form.
“No puede haber otra respuesta que no consista en la deliberación, la formación de mayorías y el voto parlamentario.”— There can be no other answer than one that does not consist of deliberation, the formation of majorities and parliamentary voting.
⚠️ Do not omit the no in the subordinate clause, otherwise the meaning becomes affirmative, contrary to the intended meaning.
Subject clause structure: lo que + ser + adj. + es que
B1
This structure is used to emphasize a point, meaning 'what is ... is that ...'. Lo que introduces the subject clause, and es que is followed by a predicative clause. For example: Lo que es inaceptable es que en una situación de emergencia se vuelva a las divisiones. (What is unacceptable is that in an emergency situation we return to divisions.) Note that the subordinate clause may use the subjunctive depending on the context.
“Lo que es inaceptable es que en una situación de emergencia se vuelva a las divisiones y la parálisis de siempre.”— What is unacceptable is that in an emergency situation we return to the usual divisions and paralysis.
⚠️ Do not write que instead of lo que; lo que here is a relative pronoun referring to the whole concept.

Spain's Housing Crisis and Social Movements
In recent years, Spain has faced a severe housing crisis, with soaring rents, young people unable to live independently, and elderly people being evicted. In September 2024, 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal was evicted from the home she had lived in all her life, sparking national attention and protests. This event became a catalyst for political parties to reach a consensus on housing. Spain's housing problem is not only an economic issue but also reflects a deep fracture in the social contract.
