Watch out, English speaker

Spanish passive 'se' (pasiva refleja) often trips up English speakers because it looks like a reflexive verb but functions as a passive. In English, we say 'The sale was closed off-market,' but Spanish uses 'La venta se cerró fuera del mercado'—no agent, no 'by' phrase. Remember: the verb agrees with the thing being sold, not with any person. Past participles as post-modifiers (e.g., 'construida en 1935') are common in Spanish but can feel clunky to English ears. English often uses a relative clause ('which was built in 1935'), while Spanish drops the relative pronoun and verb for conciseness. Don't insert 'que fue'—just place the participle right after the noun. The structure 'no solo... sino también...' means 'not only... but also...' and is a staple of formal Spanish. English speakers might try to use 'pero también' after 'no solo', but that's incorrect—'sino' is required after a negative. Also, 'sino' (without accent) means 'but rather', not to be confused with 'si no' (if not).

Grammar spotlight

se passive (pasiva refleja)

B1

When the agent of an action is unimportant or unknown, Spanish often uses se + third-person verb, equivalent to the English passive voice. The verb agrees in number with the subject (the receiver of the action).

“La venta se cerró fuera del mercado.”— The sale was closed off-market.

⚠️ Don't forget to make the verb after se agree in number with the subject, e.g. 'se conocen pocos detalles' uses the plural.

Past participle as postmodifier

B1

A past participle (construido, citado, situado, etc.) can follow a noun as a modifier, equivalent to a relative clause with the relative pronoun and copula omitted, making the expression more concise.

“La casa, construida en 1935, tiene cuatro dormitorios.”— The house, built in 1935, has four bedrooms.

⚠️ The past participle must agree in gender and number with the noun it modifies, e.g. 'construida' agrees with feminine singular 'casa'.

no solo... sino también...

B1

Means 'not only... but also...', used to emphasize two parallel elements. Sino means 'but rather' after a negative structure, and with también it forms a cumulative contrast.

“Culkin no solo ha sabido administrar su fortuna, sino también aprovechar el auge del mercado.”— Culkin has not only known how to manage his fortune, but also how to take advantage of the market boom.

⚠️ Don't write 'no solo... sino que también' before a noun; when followed by a noun, use sino también directly.

The Dandy: From Hat Factory to Celebrity Loft

The Dandy building is located at 704 Broadway in Manhattan. It was designed and built in 1896 by the firm DeLemos & Cordes, which also designed the Macy's at Herald Square. It was originally a hat factory. Later the building was converted into loft apartments; David Bowie owned a loft on the ninth floor but never lived there. Lofts converted from industrial buildings like this are a typical housing type in New York's Noho neighborhood.
