Read in Spanish for Beginners
The best time to start reading Spanish was yesterday; the second-best time is at the 50-word vocabulary mark — far earlier than most courses suggest. Here's a concrete path from your very first paragraph to reading short news articles, with texts built for the exact stage you're at.
The three stepping stones
1. A0 dialogues — your first 50 words
Start with 4–6-line dialogues: ordering coffee, meeting someone, asking the time. Each uses a handful of words you already know from any beginner app, plus one or two new ones. Read along with the audio — this teaches your eyes what your ears already accept. Two or three dialogues a day for two weeks is enough.
2. A1–A2 texts — from sentences to paragraphs
Move to 150–250-word texts about one concrete event: a local festival, a new bus line, a sports result. The sentences stay short, but now you must hold an idea across paragraphs. This is where reading stops being decoding and starts being comprehension.
3. Daily news at A2 — the habit that compounds
One short news-style article daily. Real topics, controlled vocabulary, present and past tenses. After a month of this, most learners pick up a graded reader or children's book and are surprised it feels doable.
Rules that keep beginners reading
- Never read below 90% comprehension. Struggling is not learning here; volume is.
- Audio always on. Beginners who read silently build a mental pronunciation that real Spanish won't match. Hear it from day one.
- Finish the text. Abandoning mid-article teaches quitting. Short texts you finish beat long texts you don't.
- Five saved words per text, maximum. More means the level is too high, not that you're too undisciplined.

Frequently asked questions
What should a beginner read in Spanish first?+
Short A0 dialogues of 4–6 lines on everyday topics, with audio. They use a handful of familiar words plus one or two new ones, so you finish every text — and finishing is what builds the reading habit.
Can I learn Spanish just by reading?+
Reading builds vocabulary and grammar recognition faster than anything else, but pair it with audio so the words have sounds attached. Our texts bundle both: read while listening, and you're training reading and listening at once.
How long should a beginner's Spanish texts be?+
50–100 words at A0–A1, 150–250 words at A2. Shorter texts you finish daily beat longer texts you abandon — comprehension grows through completed volume, not heroic struggle.
When can I start reading Spanish books?+
Usually after 1–2 months of daily graded A2 reading. The milestone isn't a word count — it's when a 250-word article feels easy. At that point a graded reader at A2/B1 will feel challenging but doable.
