Watch out, English speaker

Spanish uses 'más... que' for comparisons, just like English 'more... than'. But to emphasize a big difference, Spanish often uses 'muy por encima de' (far above) or 'muy por debajo de' (far below), which don't have a direct English equivalent. English speakers might literally translate 'very above' or 'very below', which sounds unnatural. Instead, use 'far above' or 'well above' in English. Spanish distinguishes between preterite (pretérito indefinido) for completed past actions and present perfect (pretérito perfecto) for past actions connected to the present. English also has this distinction, but usage differs: Spanish often uses the present perfect for recent past events that still affect the present, while English may use simple past. For example, 'ha sumado' (has added) implies the addition is relevant now, whereas English might say 'added' if the time is not specified. Pay attention to context to choose the right tense. Spanish uses 'rentable' to mean 'profitable' or 'profit-generating', but English speakers might confuse it with 'rentable' (able to be rented). The noun 'rentabilidad' means 'profitability', not 'rentability'. Always check the context: in business, it's about profits, not renting.

Grammar spotlight

Comparatives: más... que and muy por encima de

A2

In Spanish, to compare two things, use más + adjective/noun + que, meaning 'more... than.' To emphasize a large difference, use muy por encima de ('far above') or muy por debajo de ('far below').

“Esta cifra está muy por encima de otros bancos de inversión globales.”— This figure is far above other global investment banks.

⚠️ Do not omit que when using más... que; for example, do not say más alto de; it should be más alto que.

Contrast between past simple and present perfect

B1

In Spanish, the past simple (pretérito indefinido) describes completed past actions, e.g., tenía ('had'). The present perfect (pretérito perfecto) describes past actions connected to the present, e.g., ha sumado ('has added'). In this text, both are used alternately to reflect different time frames.

“Hace menos de cinco años, BBVA tenía poco más de 3.000 empleados. Desde entonces ha sumado 2.000 trabajadores.”— Less than five years ago, BBVA had just over 3,000 employees. Since then it has added 2,000 workers.

⚠️ Do not combine hace + time with the present perfect, e.g., do not say hace cinco años ha sumado; use the past simple sumó instead.
