Watch out, English speaker

Spanish impersonal 'se' sentences like 'se calcula' have no direct English equivalent. English speakers often try to translate it as 'it is calculated' or 'one calculates', but the natural English is simply 'it is estimated' or 'they estimate'. Avoid adding a subject like 'people' unless you want to sound overly formal. In Spanish, 'permitir' takes an indirect object pronoun (e.g., 'permite a los visitantes entrar'), but English 'allow' uses a direct object without 'to' before the infinitive: 'allows visitors to enter'. A common mistake is to say 'permits to visitors enter' or to omit 'to' before the verb. Remember: Spanish uses 'a + person' and no 'to' before the infinitive, while English uses no preposition before the person and 'to' before the verb.

In Spanish, 'se' + a third-person singular verb is used to make general or impersonal statements, equivalent to English 'one...', 'people...', or 'you...' in a general sense. For example, 'se calcula' means 'it is estimated' or 'people estimate'.
