Watch out, English speaker

Spanish often uses 'se + third-person verb' for passive meaning, while English typically uses 'be + past participle'. For example, 'se realiza' means 'is carried out', not 'realizes itself'. English speakers may mistakenly translate 'se' as 'itself' or omit it, but in Spanish it's essential for impersonal passive constructions. 'Basta con + infinitive' means 'it's enough to + verb' or 'you just need to + verb'. English speakers might literally translate 'basta' as 'bastards' or 'stop', but here it's a verb meaning 'suffices'. Also, note that 'con' is required before the infinitive, unlike English where 'with' is not used. The Spanish structure 'tanto... como...' translates to 'both... and...' or 'as much... as...' in English. English speakers might try to use 'so much... as...' or 'as... as...', but 'tanto' must agree in gender and number with the following noun. For example, 'tanto a pequeños como a grandes' means 'to both small and large'.

Grammar spotlight

Passive voice: se + third-person verb

B1

In Spanish, the passive voice is often formed with se plus a third-person verb. This construction emphasizes the action itself rather than who performs it. For example: se realiza (is carried out), se completa (is completed).

“La configuración se realiza desde las aplicaciones de banca móvil.”— The configuration is done from the mobile banking apps.

⚠️ Make sure the verb agrees in number with the subject, e.g., las tarjetas se añaden.

basta con + infinitive

B1

Basta con followed by an infinitive means 'it is enough to do something' or 'you only need to do something'. It is used to simplify instructions.

“basta con acercar el móvil al terminal de punto de venta.”— You only need to hold the phone near the point-of-sale terminal.

⚠️ Do not omit the preposition con; using basta directly with an infinitive is incorrect.

tanto... como... structure

B1

Tanto... como... is used to connect two parallel elements, meaning 'both... and...' or 'whether... or...'.

“La funcionalidad llega tanto a pequeños y medianos negocios como a grandes cadenas comerciales.”— The functionality reaches both small and medium-sized businesses and large retail chains.

⚠️ Tanto does not change for gender or number; always use tanto... como....
