Estamos abiertos a cualquier operación inorgánica.

Watch out, English speaker

Spanish present perfect (pretérito perfecto) often translates to English simple past, but it always connects to the present. English speakers may incorrectly use simple past for recent events with 'this year' or 'already'. For example, 'ING ha incrementado sus resultados' means 'ING has increased its results' (not 'ING increased'). Spanish present subjunctive in si-clauses for unreal or uncertain conditions often confuses English speakers because English uses indicative. For instance, 'si surge alguna operación' uses indicative because it's a real possibility, but if it were 'si surgiera', it would be subjunctive. English would say 'if an operation arises' without special mood. Spanish relative clauses with prepositions require 'el que/el cual' (e.g., 'al que no servimos'), while English uses 'that/which' with preposition at the end or 'to which'. English speakers might omit the preposition or use 'who' incorrectly. Also, 'que' can't be omitted in Spanish as 'that' sometimes is in English.

Grammar spotlight

Present perfect (Pretérito perfecto)

B1

Formed with the present tense of the auxiliary verb haber + past participle. It expresses a past action that is still relevant to the present. It is often used with time expressions such as ya, todavía, este año.

“ING ha incrementado sus resultados favorecido por las condiciones económicas.”— ING has increased its results, favored by economic conditions.

⚠️ Do not confuse it with the simple past: the present perfect emphasizes the effect on the present, while the simple past emphasizes that the action itself is finished.

Present subjunctive (Presente de subjuntivo)

B1

Used to express wishes, possibilities, necessity, or future uncertain actions. In si-clauses, if the condition is unreal or uncertain, the main clause may use the subjunctive.

“si surge alguna operación para acelerar el crecimiento... estaremos encantados de analizarla.”— if any operation arises to accelerate growth... we will be happy to analyze it.

⚠️ Note that the present subjunctive cannot be used in si-clauses for real conditions; here surge is indicative because the condition may come true.

Relative clauses (Oraciones de relativo)

B1

Introduced by que, quien, el cual, etc., they modify the preceding noun. Note that when a preposition comes first, el que/el cual is used.

It is 40% of the market that we do not serve and that in 2027 we will begin to serve.

⚠️ When the relative pronoun is preceded by a preposition, que cannot be used alone as the object; el que/el cual is required.

ING's digital banking model in Spain

ING entered Spain in 1999 and was one of the first foreign banks to offer purely digital banking services. It has no traditional branch network and serves customers through an online platform and a small number of flagship offices. This model lowers costs, allowing it to offer higher deposit rates and attract a large customer base.
