Watch out, English speaker

Spanish present perfect (ha convertido, ha estimado) maps neatly onto English 'has converted/has estimated,' so English speakers often assume the two tenses behave identically. But Spanish uses it for recent past events tied to now where English would often switch to simple past ('Santander converted the US into its key market'). Watch for time markers like 'este año' or 'recientemente' that force the perfect tense in Spanish but not in English. English speakers see 'lo que hará Webster es ampliar...' and try to translate word-for-word as 'what Webster will do is expand,' which sounds clunky. The trap is forgetting that Spanish front-loads the emphasized element with 'lo que' plus a verb, then links it with 'es' before the real point. English prefers cleft sentences like 'What Webster will do is expand...' but Spanish uses this structure far more often, so learners underuse it. The absolute participle 'una vez completada la fusión' looks like a dangling modifier to English eyes, tempting learners to add 'it' or 'being.' English requires a full clause ('once the merger is completed'), but Spanish drops the auxiliary and subject entirely. Don't insert 'siendo' or 'estando'—the bare past participle plus noun is the correct fixed pattern.

Grammar spotlight

Present perfect (Pretérito perfecto): haber + past participle for recently completed actions

B1

In Spanish, the present perfect is formed with the present tense of haber + past participle. It expresses past actions connected to the present or recently completed actions. This text uses it several times, e.g., “ha convertido” (has converted), “ha estimado” (has estimated), “se ha comprometido” (has committed).

“Santander ha convertido Estados Unidos en su mercado clave.”— Santander has turned the United States into its key market.

⚠️ Don't confuse it with the simple past: the present perfect emphasizes a connection to the present, while the simple past emphasizes a completed past action.

Emphatic structure lo que + verb

B1

Use “lo que + verb + es + noun/clause” to emphasize a part of the sentence, meaning “what ... is ...”. In this text, “Lo que hará Webster es ampliar...” follows this structure.

“Lo que hará Webster es ampliar las posibilidades de que los beneficios se incrementen.”— What Webster will do is expand the possibilities for profits to increase.

⚠️ Note that the verb after lo que must agree with its subject, and es is followed by a noun or infinitive.

Absolute construction (participio absoluto) expressing time

B1

An absolute construction consists of a past participle + noun and indicates that one action is completed before another occurs, equivalent to “once ...”. In this text, “una vez completada la fusión” is an example.

“Una vez completada la fusión de las entidades legales, se generarán beneficios.”— Once the merger of the legal entities is completed, profits will be generated.

⚠️ The past participle must agree in gender and number with the noun, e.g., completada agrees with fusión.
